With the ZV-1 II, Sony has launched a successor to the ZV-1 vlogging camera. The Sony ZV-1 II focuses on vloggers and content creators, but also has an excellent sensor and megapixel number for photography.
The 1-inch large sensor with 20 megapixels is the same as its predecessor. The 921k-dot 3-inch tilting screen and the hybrid AF system have not changed either. That’s not a bad thing because these work properly. New is the animal tracking when making video, and there are more functions on the touchscreen. If the ZV-1 II comes out well in the test, it can certainly be one of the best vlogging cameras of the moment.
New wider lens
The Sony ZV-1 is from 2020 and the most significant change from the successor is the new lens. With 18-50 mm f/1.8-4 (Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T), this is a lot wider than the 24-70 mm f/1.8-2.8 lens of the ZV-1. According to Sony, the wider lens is a more logical choice for vloggers who film themselves handheld or want to capture larger groups of people.
Although the image has become wider, the maximum aperture has increased at full zoom. This has an effect on the bokeh, depth of field and light transmission. On the ZV-1 the lens used an aperture of f/2.8 at 70mm, while on the ZV-1 II it uses f/4 at 50mm.
The aperture is then larger, the bokeh is improved. The bokeh effect brings soft backgrounds and beautiful rings around out-of-focus lights in the background. The focus has also been improved and now recognizes multiple faces when recording video. If a new person comes into view, the camera can recognize this face through the multi-face focus on this person.
Other improvements over the Sony ZV-1 include the ability to charge the camera via USB-C and change the battery without removing the optional grip.
Cinematic Vlog Setting
The new Cinematic Vlog Setting displays the image with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and black bars. This image can be combined with different styles and looks. With these functions, colours can be edited a little while filming.
Of course, you also need perfect sound for a good vlog. Now it is possible with the 3-way microphone to choose between the microphone on or the back, to better isolate the speaker. Previously, this was only possible with the optional extra microphone.
Highlight the best images
With the Shot Mark function, you can mark the best parts of a video in the camera while filming. This way you can find the good shots more easily, and it is possible to send these clips directly to your phone. Livestreaming or use as a webcam is possible thanks to UVC support. This allows the Sony ZV-1 II to be connected directly to a computer or compatible Sony Xperia phone.
Price and availability Sony ZV-1 II compact vlogging camera
The Sony ZV-1 Mark II costs $899 and the camera can already be ordered and will then be delivered in June.
