The Lumix S1H II will be Panasonic’s new video flagship with perhaps 8K video. We can also expect a full-frame sensor with extra pixels. Which makes it an ideal hybrid system camera.
It should be clear that the S1H II succeeds the current Lumix S1H. The Lumix S1H, from 2019, is a full-frame mirrorless camera and the current flagship for filmmakers who use a mirrorless camera. In addition to the Lumix S1H, the popular Panasonic Lumix GH6 is also sold. It has a Micro FourThirds sensor and focuses mainly on film, but can also be used for photography.
The current Lumix S1H uses 24.2 megapixels, 4:2:2 10-bit video recording with V-Log / V-Gamut and 14+ stops of dynamic range. Naturally, the Panasonic Lumix S1H II will take this up a notch.
Introducing phase detection autofocus
It are the Panasonic Lumix S5 II and Lumix S5 IIx that finally use phase detection autofocus. In older models, Panasonic used the less reliable contrast detection. We therefore expect to see phase detection in the S1H II.
Full-frame sensor with 50MP
The rumours about the Lumix S1H II come from Youtuber Ordinary Filmmaker and according to him, the new camera will have a sensor close to 50 megapixels. This means that 8K video, or at least 8K oversampled, film is possible.
Frame rates in 8K and 4K
The 8K video could be recorded in UHD and DCI 24/25, 30, 48 or 50/60 frames per second. 8K 60fps in particular is ideal for filmmakers who want to apply slow motion twice without having to go back to 4K. In 4K, 120fps would be achievable, slowing down your footage up to 4x with no loss of quality.
Raw video
The S1H II is also good for video recordings in RAW format. This is probably possible in both 6K and 8K ProRes RAW. However, it is not clear whether this will be recorded internally or through the Atomos Ninja V.
Storage
It is not yet clear what kind of storage memory will be used. Since 8K is possible, it seems logical that at least one CFexpress slot is present. This is because even the best SD cards struggle to handle 8K film.
Price and availability Panasonic Lumix S1H II
The Lumix S1H is currently on sale for around €3240, which makes it quite a professional camera. This is still a lot cheaper than what the competitor Canon EOS R5C costs. But, the Lumix S1H II will obviously be pricier, and the Lumix S5 II is already a price fighter. According to the rumours, we can expect the S1H II soon.
